What is a steam room here actually built to survive?

Vapour pressure pushing out from inside, and humidity pressing in from outside, all day, every day. That combination is exactly why we build the enclosure as a tanked box rather than just a tiled room, and why the spec doesn't flex regardless of budget.

• Waterproof membrane running across the slab and up every wall, with penetrations for pipes and cables properly sealed.
• A floor pitched at least one per cent to a trapped drain.
• A ceiling pitched just enough to walk condensation to the walls, away from the seat.
• Mosaic or large-format tile, a moulded seat, a point for aroma dosing, and a glass door set into a channel rather than relying on a silicone bead.
• A 6-9 kW steam generator sitting in a cupboard you can actually open, not sealed behind finished tiling.

Every room we hand over keeps that generator reachable for descaling, because in this water a generator nobody can get to is a generator that eventually just gets switched off and forgotten.

What the generator needs: power, water and somewhere for it to drain

A 6-9 kW steam generator draws 7,700-11,000 VA, so most houses face the same PLN upgrade a dry sauna would need, and that cost sits with the owner. It also wants a clean, ideally softened water feed — scale build-up on the element is the number one reason an older room quietly stops making steam, and it's entirely avoidable with the right feed.

Where a compound or crew facility runs its own standby set, the generator gets folded into the load calculation with its own breaker and ELCB, staged so it doesn't restart at the same moment as pumps and air conditioning. Drainage gets checked at survey stage, since fitting a steam room into an existing bathroom often means lifting the floor to create the fall.

Sizing a room for a hotel, gym or company fitness area

A commercial room isn't just a bigger version of a household one — it's a different spec entirely. A hotel spa in the city or Samarinda, a gym near Balikpapan Kota, or a recovery suite inside a company mess might run twelve to sixteen hours a day, so we step up generator capacity, oversize the ventilation, switch the tile adhesive and detail the seat for continuous use rather than occasional use. A commercial steam room starts at an indicative IDR 150 million on a four-to-eight-week programme.

A good share of our steam room work in Balikpapan is repair, not new build. The failures cluster around three things: tanking that gave way under the seat, a scaled or undersized generator, and a flat ceiling that drips on whoever's sitting underneath. A refit covering membrane, generator and tiling runs an indicative IDR 15-50 million and takes one to three weeks — usually a fraction of what the original install cost.
