What does an ice bath Balikpapan installation consist of?

The tub is larch or thermowood over a food-grade liner, from 1.2x0.8 m for one person to 1.8x0.9 m for two, with closed-cell insulation beneath it and insulated pipework to the plant. Uninsulated hose in tropical sun undoes a third of the cooling, which is the most common fault we find on units built by others.

• A plunge chiller of half to one HP, programmable anywhere between 3 and 15 degrees.
• Cartridge filtration with ozone or ultraviolet, so water changes fall to every three or four weeks.
• An insulated lid, which pays for itself in compressor hours and is the item most often omitted.
• A drain, a graded floor and a hose point, so a water change never becomes an operation.

Why does the plunge chiller need corrosion protection here?

Because salt air is relentless on this coast. Addresses at Batakan, Manggar and along the Klandasan seafront sit in it year round, and a standard condenser coil with brass fittings will pit and leak long before the compressor is due for replacement. For those locations we specify a titanium heat exchanger, a coated coil and 316 stainless fittings, and we shade the condenser from direct afternoon sun.

Rain adds the second requirement. The plant must not stand in water, so chillers are mounted clear of the ground under a cover with free air on three sides. The upgrade adds a modest line to the quote and roughly doubles the service life of the unit, which for a corporate client is the whole argument.

Power, soft starts and what happens when PLN drops

An ice bath is electrically undemanding: 0.6-1.2 kW, so no PLN upgrade is required even on 4,400 VA. What matters is behaviour, not draw. The compressor gets a soft start so it does not trip the board, an ELCB of its own, and a restart delay so that after an outage the chiller does not come back at the same instant as the air conditioning and the pumps.

On a compound generator the same logic applies, and a one HP chiller alongside a 6 kW sauna heater wants at least 10 kVA of headroom. Because a plunge holds temperature continuously rather than on demand, we also insulate for interruption: with the lid on, a well-built tub drifts only a couple of degrees over a long outage.

Recovery rooms for rotation crews and gyms

The corporate ice bath is a different brief. A recovery room for a rotation crew typically pairs an eight-person sauna with two plunges, runs sixteen hours a day, and is judged on uptime rather than appearance: duplicated filtration, accessible plant, a written service schedule and spare parts held locally. That package starts at an indicative IDR 250 million over four to eight weeks.

For gyms around Balikpapan Kota and Sepinggan the usual configuration is one plunge and a compact cabin, positioned so wet traffic does not cross the weights floor.
